My Journey in Karate:

My name is Leonie Kersey, and karate has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I started training at the age of four at the Caribbean Karate Club in Ipswich, under the watchful eye of my first instructor, Leni Austin. I was small, shy, and unsure of myself—but as soon as I put on my first gi, something clicked. Karate quickly became my safe place, my passion, and my path.

By six years old, I was already competing in Kata and Kumite. I didn’t fully understand what competition meant at that age—I just loved the feeling of stepping on the mat, giving my all, and learning something new every time. As I worked my way through the belt system, my confidence grew, and I found not only a sport I loved, but a community that shaped who I am today.

From Small Girl in a Gi to England International:

At fourteen, everything changed when I was invited to train with the England Karate Squad. I will never forget that moment. It was both exciting and overwhelming, but it pushed me to work harder than I ever had before. The training was intense, but it was also inspiring; I was surrounded by athletes who shared the same drive and passion.

Before long, I earned my place on the England National Team. Wearing the England badge on my chest and representing my country on the international stage remains one of the greatest honours of my life. I competed in International Opens, European Championships, and World Championships, and along the way achieved English, British, and European titles. But just as important as the medals were the lessons—discipline, resilience, teamwork, and the understanding that success comes from years of small, consistent efforts.

Finding My Purpose in Teaching:

When I retired from competitive karate, I faced a difficult question: What comes next? I soon realised that my next chapter wasn’t about stepping away from karate, but about giving back to the sport that had given me so much.

I founded my first karate club, nervous but excited. I wanted to create an environment where students—children and adults alike—could feel the same sense of belonging, confidence, and achievement that karate had given me. Over the past 20+ years of coaching, I’ve watched countless students grow in skill, strength, and character. Some have become champions; others have simply found a home, a family, or a sense of belief in themselves. Every one of those journeys matters to me.

My approach to teaching is personal. I don’t just want to build athletes—I want to help people find the best version of themselves.

Supporting the Future of Karate:

Alongside running my own club, I am proud to coach for Karate England, working with athletes at all levels in both Kata and Kumite. I also serve on the Karate England Board, where I help shape the future of our sport nationally. Being able to influence coaching standards, support young talent, and contribute to karate’s growth in the UK is something I value deeply.

Why I Still Love What I Do:

Karate has been the constant thread running through my entire life. It shaped me as a child, challenged me as an athlete, and continues to inspire me as a coach. Every time a student earns a new belt, conquers a fear, steps into their first competition, or smiles with pride at a new skill, I am reminded of why I do what I do.

A Lasting Impact:

Teaching karate and helping others grow is one of the greatest privileges of my life. Watching someone gain confidence, overcome challenges, or achieve something they once thought impossible reminds me why I started this journey. From stepping into the dojo as a four-year-old white belt to guiding others today, it has been filled with moments I’ll cherish forever.
